Edward bates: he"s the eldest of the four republican candidates born in virginia in 1793. After the revolutionary war, the family falls under hard times. Bates is 11 when his father dies and the family is broken apart. However, bates was lucky enough to be educated by a wealthy cousin living in maryland. Bates serves in the war of 1812 and in 1814, at the age of 21, he settles in missouri and apprentices in law. That was the way you became a lawyer back in the 19th century. You either apprenticed for two years with a lawyer or you just taught yourself and wrote the bar exams. Bates will be a delegate when the missouri constitutional hearing is held, he"ll serve as a one time whig congressman. He"s a judge in the st. louis court. He"s a prominent whig and when the whig party falls apart, bates joins the republicans.
