The term counter-culture is most commonly used to refer collectively to the alternative politics expressed by a variety of groups in the 1960s such as anti-war activists. More generally, (cid:498)the counter culture(cid:499) describes all those groups that challenge and contradict the (cid:498)common sense(cid:499) of everyday life, with the aim of creating a better society. Subculture and counter cultures are engaged in the struggle to create new and different forms of social reality; the struggle has been directed against popular or mass culture itself. The 1960s were a period of tension and turbulence for much of the u. s. The counterculture attempted to promote an alternative lifestyle that encouraged peace, love and freedom. the beat generation would ultimately transform into the counterculture.
