HST 119 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Feudalism, Caravel, Secondary Source
Document Summary
History can be divided into 2 different sources: Primary - consists of evidence (document, testimony, archives, old maps, old remains, archeological material) inquiring from the actual time contemporainious of the time and event. Secondary - consists of the interpretation (arguments, movies) of a specific time can be used to inform in order to add onto arguments e. g. reports, readings from others. It is our responsibility as historians to look as far as possible to gain and interpret information, things representative - seek evidence wisely. If found contradicting evidence against previous argument, do not ignore - good historians take it head on with their arguments and even bring it up: do not suppress contrasting evidence. Historians must keep an open mind - always be careful of trying not to fall in love with your own argument: you may be wrong, and the more you learn. It can be an artifact because it can be viewed as a completely different way.
