Footage is interpreted and edited from the filmmakers point of view. Documentary film a way to assemble images sounds and words to portray a particular message. Propaganda some made with good intent. John grierson (1898-1972) coined term documentary as the creative treatment f actuality. Stories about reality using real people who are not playing a role but as seen by the filmmaker therefore still a representation. About real people not generally playing a role but everyone acts different on camera. Tells stories from what happened nichols cautions: documentaries must come closer to the rules that govern historical writing i. e. talking heads are identified to show credibility and possible bias. Like the narrative documentary is constructed its not a reproduction of reality it"s a representation ; reproduction = exactly as the original 3d copy, representation = abstraction i. e. poem or painting or photo. Representation = documentary; judged by fidelity to truth of the original.
