Sultan is still there as a religious figurehead. Muslim subjects across europe were called and asked to rebel against respective empires and hopefully take over. Super unsuccessful, mass desertions, subjects stuck with respective empires. The push for nationalism is much greater than religious push. British recently switched their ships and needed oil from persia. Campaign in the middle-east is largely fought by indian troops.
