The british defeat at kut (dec 1915-april 1916) Becomes an issue in the fall of 1917 because of russia. Russia is present in both parts of the middle-east. The release to russia makes britain look bad, sign of weakness. 1914: call for war (jihad) against the colonial powers of britain, france, russia, serbia. The sultan is replaced by the young turks. Sultan is still there as a religious figurehead. Muslim subjects across europe were called and asked to rebel against respective empires and hopefully take over. Super unsuccessful, mass desertions, subjects stuck with respective empires. The push for nationalism is much greater than religious push. British recently switched their ships and needed oil from persia. Campaign in the middle-east is largely fought by indian troops.
