HST 802 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Hitler Youth, Bernd Eichinger, Unapologetic
Document Summary
Seminar #4 (film downfall, and downfall review article) Arguments have been presented on both ends of the spectrum in roel vande winkel"s review of the film downfall. He makes the point that many attempts have been made to illustrate the final days of the third reich, but that this is the first film to be made as for mainstream audiences focusing on the subject. Downfall has become an international hit, winning various international awards. However, there are various opinions of the film; such as whether the film and subject matter were in good standing or not. As well as questioning whether the film was historically correct in its narrative and the relevance of this film. This review also connects downfall with larger arguments surrounding mainstream cinema, like its ability to imitate history. The idea that symbolism in film, though altering historical events instead of recreating them, can make the film more substantial is questioned.
