Class 6 – October 18, 2012 MHR741 Section 021 – Thursday (10AM-1PM) Supportive Communication  As HR professionals, the responsibility of not letting conflicts escalate falls on you  We need to be able to communicate supportively to staff even in the most strenuous situations  There is a simple equation in organizations: - positive interpersonal relationships lead to positive energy: they help you feel elevated, revitalized and enlivened - negative interpersonal relationships lead to negative energy: they lead to feeling depressed, less alive, emotionally exhausted, down and de-energized  Positive or negative interpersonal relationships have physiological, emotional, intellectual, social and organizational effects  It is your job as an HR professional to convince managers, directors and other authorities the importance of positive or negative interpersonal relationships within organizations  Building trust is a very important aspect of leadership, interpersonal skills and all HR branches  “Most individuals don’t seem to feel a strong need to improve their own skill level.” – this is the biggest communication problem  The above is the first barrier that needs to be knocked down before reducing negative communication  How can organizations handle negativity and negative communication? - anonymous (physical and electronic) drop box of complaints and concerns - a monthly newsletter with articles and tips to deal with workplace bullying - employee surveys to see whether they feel safe - hotlines, information and training sessions - external consultants, negotiators and/or mediators  Communication problems are also caused if there is no focus on accuracy  Accuracy is the ability to transmit clear and precise messages  In a workplace, HR personnel cannot be seen biased or too friendly with anyone in particular  *Coaching focuses on helping someone to learn a new skill; it can be looked at as a training role; when people are being coached, they tend to be less defensive about learning new things  *Counseling is helping someone identify the problem themselves; there is more listening than talking in counseling; people tend to be more defensive in regards to facing the problem  You must
