OSI Model (Open system interconnect) Layers Functions Protocols Hardware 7 Application User Interface: Browser HTTP, FTP, SMTP, POP3 Gateway 6 Presentation Data format, Encryption, PGP, SMIME, EFS Gateway Compression, Text, GIF, JPEG 5 Session Handshaking Ping Gateway 4 Transport Data Delivery TCP, UDP Gateway 3 Network Addressing IP, ICMP, IGMP, VOIP Router, Switch, iPhone, iPad, iPod ,Gateway 2 Data link LLC, MAC ARP NIC, Switch, Bridge 1 Physical Signal Processing Network Cable, HUB Repeater, AP, Topology 7, 6, 5 File 4: Segmentation 3: Packet = Segment (Data) + Source IP + Destination IP Layers 5, 6 & 7 generate file = PDU (protocol Data Unit) LLC Sub layer: Data flow control, through a process that is called CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Checker) Data flow = stream of bits CRC Check for # of Zeroes or Ones Sent over the NIC frame.  Receiver should get 9 zeroes as a frame if not  resend.
