Class 3 notes: building codes and commercial construction. Christine leu: building codes are mandatory requirements by law that have a major effect on interior construction. No municipality will accept an application for permit unless all associated drawings have been stamped by an individual who has successfully completed the required ontario. Building code examinations and has registered under the province. To effectively use the building codes you must first identify: the major occupancies, multi or single tenant, non-combustible or combustible construction, sprinklered (equipped with a system of automatic sprinklers) or unsprinklered. This results in different exiting requirements: ease of evacuation i. e. it is more difficult to evacuate patients in stretchers or wheel chairs. The code is formatted to include these major principles of fire protection. 1. fire detection smoke and heat detectors (pull stations)- knowledge of fire. 2. fire containment (compartmentalization) - separating the fire from the rest of the building.
