Chapter 1: Introduction to the Business Context
Business Organizations and the Business Environment:
- When we refer to business we mean an organization with one or more people who:
1) Decide on common goals to pursue
2) Work together to locate and organize resources
3) Create processes in order to achieve the desired goals
- One strong factor that influences business goals is the business environment
o The Business Environment is a complex collection of political, economic, social, and
technological factors that organizational leaders must consider when making decisions
regarding goals, organizational forms, and the creation of business value
The Changing Organization Form:
- Business are now using advanced Information Systems(IS) such as Decision support systems
(DSS) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems
Globalization:
- Globalization means that modern businesses are using information technology to expand their
market to customers around the globe, to find the lowest-cost suppliers regardless of location,
and even to create 24-hour business days by shutting work across time zones and nations
The Internet:
- The internet is simply a large number of cooperating computer networks that use the same
rules for sending messages
- The world wide web is an internet software application that allows us to transfer text, images,
audio, and video
- Internet has become such an integral part of our personal and business lives because of its :
communication, information, and commerce
o Buying and selling of goods is also known as commerce
o E-Commerce is the use of information systems, technologies, and computer networks
by individuals and organizations to create business value
Becoming a Knowledge-Enabled Professional:
- Knowledge work involves that is readily codified, such as the knowledge in this textbook
- Tactic Knowledge is knowledge that you gain through experience, insight, and discovery
What is an Information System:
- An Information System (IS) is an organized collection of people, information, business
processes, and information technology, designed to transform inputs into outputs, in order to
achieve a goal
