ITM 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Organizational Ecology, Information Quality, Information System
Document Summary
Improving hundreds of thousands of small decisions adds up to large annual value for the business. Unstructured - decision maker must provide judgement, evaluation, & insight to solve problem. Structured - repetitive & routine; involve definite procedure for handling so they do not have to be treated each time as new. Semi-structured - only part of the problem has clear-cut answer provided by accepted procedure. Middle managers: make more structured decisions but these may include unstructured components. Operational managers/rank & file employees: make more structured decisions. Intelligence - discovering, identifying & understanding the problems occurring in the organization. Design - identifying & exploring solutions to the problem. Implementation - making chosen alternative work & continuing to monitor how well solution is working. Information systems can only assist in some of the roles played by managers. Actual behaviour of managers appear to be less systematic, more informal, less reflective, more reactive, & less well organized than in the classic model.
