Bernays showed american corporations how to make people want things they didn"t need by linking them to their desires. By satisfying these desires people were happy and therefore docile. 100 years ago in vienna, freud"s ideas were hated because he suggested expressing emotions but rulers believed that this would make one vulnerable. Freud believed that we repressed feelings that were too dangerous to express (the unconscious) Freud saw the 1914 ww as a prime example of the primitive forces in human beings and no one knew how to stop them. Bernays" kept in touch with his uncle and his main client was caruso, an opera singer, on the night that caruso was singing in the us, america was going to war against vienna and germany. Bernays" observation of the crowd rallying with wilson during the war and the propaganda behind it made him wonder if propaganda could be used during peacetime.
