Individualism vs. collectivism
- Question of personal allegiance and of identity
- Two basic questions asked- should my allegiance be more oriented towards myself or the
group? Should my identity be oriented more towards myself or others?
- Individualist societies are more rare- more wealth, education, individualism emerged with
democracy in common day sense out of enlightenment
- Collective societies are more common
- Good to keep the universal and individual in mind- all societies have both groups and
individuals but not all societies agree the two are equally important
- Strength of ties with individuals- with really good friends we lose contact- horrible for
collective society, friends seen as individuals
- Individual society can be judged by collective society for being too _____, individuals
judge collective societies for being too needy

- Swede decided he will be person sent because if he got multi deal he would be promoted-
greeted by Saudi partners who wine and dine him, as days go on during business
meetings, Swede gets nervous because they don’t talk about the deal- soon after he
arrives home without deal they receive word from Saudis that they want to close the deal-
Swede gets promoted to a new division and someone else is assigned to their agreement,
when Saudis find out they took their deal back and they said if you put someone else
apart from Swede deal is off
- Saudi Arabia a more collective society and putting Swede’s individuality first did not
matter to them but rather maintaining a relationship

you can act on it without worrying about everyone else can be beneficial
- Convenient
- Goals- have specific life goals you can work towards without being concerned with how
it will affect other people
- Encourages self-reliance
- Can simplify things
