High vs. low power distance
- Metaphor is high vs. low- high are not better than low
- Question asked has to do with power, not height, whether power should be distributed
equally or not
- Power in terms of institutions (dictators), there are micro institutions (family- should
power at this micro level be distributed equally among family members or should one
person dominate)
- How do we hand inequality- exists in all societies- acting like it doesn’t exist is
marginalizing those in power
- How does given society deal with wealth- forcibly redistribute it? or does it say hands
off, let those that earn money be powerful
- Universal issues- inequality (all societies feature it), particulars (how societies decide),
closer something is too middle more difficult to say what society dominates, if inequality
increases more limits set
- China- high power distance society, being amped up because government wants to rule
past limited time, 5% of population belong to communist party, macro level small
population has all/most of power, micro level party leader gains more power through time
- Egalitarian- low power distance- equality, not exactly equal because a pure equal society,
so far anarchy has not been successful, providing equal opportunity and those specialized
in an area will naturally be better than others, everything would take longer to get done,
without someone being charged with being leader it would be extremely inconvenient-
for purposes of efficiency we have to have someone take charge and hope they don’t
become too powerful
- Totalitarian/authoritarian- high power distance- one small group in charge
- When we talk about power distance, also talking about relative rank- should high rank in
one area (rich person), should that also give you more political clout, should it allow you
to dominate news media
- Should high rank in one area be hopstede in another area
- In high power society- if wealthy naturally granted higher status in politics and media
news
- Low power society says wealth should not determine your political power
