Document Summary

Each machining operation produces a characteristic part geometry due to. Relative motions between tool and workpart: generating: part geometry determined by feed direction of cutting tool. Shape of cutting tool: forming: shape of tool determines shape of part. Operations are same whether on lathe, drill, mill, saw. (mathematically) How tool is used depends on machine and part being made. Lathe is used: has two axis of motion (across and into the work piece) Used to reduce diameter of part (shafts and spindles) Facing: tool fed radially inward, to square-off the end of a shaft, perpendicular to part axis, must place slightly off-centre. Contour turning: tool follows contour that is not straight. Chamfering: cutting edge cuts and angle on the corner of the cylinder, prevents sharp edges. Parting: cutting off part of work piece, tool is fed radially into rotating work at some location to cut off end of part.
