MTL 200 Lecture 9: Chapter 9
Document Summary
Component: a chemical constituent of an alloy, either pure metal or compounds. A series of possible alloys consisting of the same components for example, pb-sn system. 9. 2 solubility limit (mc question) solubility limit: the maximum concentration of solute that maybe added without forming a new phase. Phases: a homogenous portion in a system having uniform physical and chemical characteristics. (for example: 3- every polymorphic form (fe has bcc and fcc) Microstructure: characterized by: the number of phases, the phase composition, relative amounts, distribution. Phase equilibrium: the state of a system corresponding to the minimum free energy, where the phase characteristics remain constant over indefinite time period. Free energy: a thermodynamic quantity that is a function of both the internal energy and entropy (or randomness) of a system. Metastable state: none equilibrium state that may persist for a long time. Not important: 7 binary isomorphous (aka phase diagram) systems.
