Key difference between novel and film is the way the narrative is structured. Book clearly starts with tension between norman and his mother. Film doesn"t introduce norman until about halfway through. Shock to kill off a main character halfway through the movie. Fixed to believe she is the main protagonist. In the novel, mother is very much a character (as depicted by norman) but the film has troubles to address this without revealing if she"s real or not. When marion is in the car, there"s an inner dialogue that we see her reacting to. She is projecting to the future (eg. mentioning monday morning, but it"s only. Voices don"t sound the same as a real conversation (eg. softer, slightly echoed) In the remake, amplifying the word cash , which is playing on her conscience. When marion is in her room and she hears norman fighting with his mother.
