Social order theories ( functionalism : there"s a natural logic to why power is distributed the way it is (hierarchically) in society, power imbalance will work itself out, consensus (orthodoxy); normativity. Conflict theories (variations of marxism, feminism, postructuralism: power is unevenly distributed due to maerial conditions of inequality (racism, sexism, classicism, ableism, colonialism, heteronomativity, change can only emerge through conflict, dissent; contention; geterodoxy. It"s troubling that the state has such sweeoping power. That corporate/private infrastructure has such a reach. That our devices can be so readily invaded. That some or many have no trouble: with this message, with how it was delivered. We play a role and have a place in sustaining/maintaining/reinforcing/consolidating power and social order. As students of media and culture, we need to ask what degree the intended use of a product determines its actual use and effects.
