Document Summary
Power: capacity of a person, team or organization to influence others. Power isn"t changing someone"s attitudes or behavior but the potential to do so. People may be unaware of their power. Legitimate power: based on a person holding a formal position. Others comply because they accept the legitimacy of the position of the power holder. Has restrictions b/c only gives the power holder the right to ask for a range of behaviors called the cone of indifference, a set of behaviors people are willing to engage in at the other person"s request. Human beings have a norm of reciprocity: feeling of obligation to help someone who has helped you. People have legitimate power when they have the right to control info that others receive. Info is resources so those who need info are dependent on the gatekeeper to give that resource. Info gatekeepers gain power by selectively distributing info so those receiving the info perceive the situation differently.
