Midterms and exams in accounting test recallso using your old high school strategies is useless for study purposes in an accounting course. #1: write your own questions and then solve them. There are three different types of questions you should make up. First, questions about the concepts (called knowledge questions). This is best done using cue cards (dollarama sells a package for ). While reading the chapter write questions on one side of the card and the solution on the other. From page 1 of chapter 1 an appropriate card would have the following: Solution: making, buying, or selling goods or providing services for money.

Projects should involve observation/measurement of livingorganisms-plants, animals, fungi, humans. They should be designedto answer a question or to test a hypothesis. Rachelâs Day Off Swimwear is a successful chain of high end swim suit boutiques. Recently, several smaller shops and boutiques were acquired to expand its operations. The new company is much larger than the original company and it has outgrown its accounting software. The original accounting system was a package from Peachtree Software, which initially ran on a stand-alone PC and later on a network. Now, the firm is preparing to install a powerful, scalable accounting package that can support the companyâs current and future operations. You have been asked to implement the new system.

Tasks

Who should receive training on the new software, and what topics should the training cover?

Students should include training topics for IT staff members, who will be responsible for the system maintenance, managers who will rely on system information and reports, and users who will interact with the system on a daily basis. Students should mention training topics similar to the examples listed in Figure 11-30 on page 447.

Sage 50 is the successor to Peachtree, which was used by many small businesses. Students can visit Sageâs site at http://na.sage.com/sage-50-accounting-us/ to review product features and ask questions, or they can visit local software retailers or businesses to learn more.

What changeover strategy would you suggest for the new accounting system? Explain your answer.

Whichever changeover method a student chooses, he or she should be able to back up the choice with supporting facts from the textbook. Each method has pros and cons, and the decision should be based on the specific situation. An accounting system, such as the one proposed by Victorian Creations, probably is modular, with features such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, and so on. This system might lend itself to a phased changeover. Because accounting data is so critical, however, a parallel operation might be desirable. It is unknown whether there are individual stores or divisions, so it is unclear whether a pilot method might be considered. Of all the methods, the only one that clearly is undesirable is direct cutover, for the reasons stated in the chapter.

When should a post-implementation evaluation be conducted? Explain your answer.

Students should be able to suggest a timeframe based on the concepts discussed in the chapter. Specifically, students should recognize that evaluation should not occur until the system has been in operation for a reasonable period of time â soon enough to allow smooth and effective resolution, but late enough to allow system bugs and problems to surface.

Last week you studied fertility and the Reproductive System. There was a very interesting reading on page 376 on freezing embryos.

Acorn Fertility Clinic has a space problem. Its director, Franklin Pearce, just presented Acorn's Board of Directions with the problem, and now a vigorous discussion was going on. Pearce left the room to think.

The problem is partly a result of the clinic's success. Since its inception ten years earlier, the clinic has almost tripled its number of patients, and its success in achieving pregnancies in infertile couples is equal to the national average.

The clinic's greatest success has been in the use of in vitro fertilization. This procedure involves fertilizing the egg outside the body and then placing the zygote in the uterus of the patient. Usually up to 15 zygotes are produced, but only a few are placed back in the woman. The rest are frozen and held in liquid nitrogen.

Infertility specialists have been freezing embryos since 1984, with much success. The length of time an embryo can be held in a frozen state and "thawed out" succcessfully is not known. With better and better freezing techniques, the time is increasing. Recently a baby was born from an embryo that had been frozen for eight years.

Acorn Fertility has been freezing embryos since its inception. It has a large number of such embryos-thousands, in fact-some frozen for ten years. The parents of many of these embryos are present or past patients who have no need for them. With its patient base increasing, Acorn needs the space for new embryos.

The problem is not Acorn's alone. Ten thousand embryos are frozen each year in the United States, and the numbers are increasing. Many of these are sitting in liquid nitrogen in fertility clinics like Acorn.

Now sitting in his office, Dr. Pearce wondered what the Board of Directions would decide to do with the embryos that aren't being used.

2. In a number of legal cases, frozen embryos have created questions. Who owns them? Are they property? Are they children? In general, courts have decided that they are neither, and that they should be left frozen because no person can be made a parent if he or she does not want to be. Is this the right decision? Why or why not?

3. In the future, we will be able to successfully thaw and implant embryos that have been frozen for 25 to 30 years. What problems do you foresee with this? What benefits? List three of each.

4. Do you think that anyone should be denied fertility treatment? If so, what do you think a doctor should take into consideration when deciding whether to provide someone fertility treatment?
