Degree to which individuals bring diverse skills and knowledge to the team: authority differentiation. Degree that decision-making responsibility is distributed throughout the team. Groups that exist primarily for benefit of their members. Ex friend you meet at lunch are informal group (little to no interdependence) We define ourselves by group memberships: goal accomplishment. Personal objectives cannot be achieved by working alone: emotional support. Comforted by mere presence of other people and are therefore motivated to be near them in stressful situation. Advantages: making better decisions, products/services, better information sharing. Process losses resources (including time and energy) expended towards team development and maintenance. Ex- team needs time and effort to resolve their disagreement, develop mutual understanding of goals, determine best strategy for accomplishing goals, etc. Brook"s law says that adding more people to late software project only make it later.
