Chapter 7 – Creavity
Evaluang decision outcomes more eecvely: 1 – make sure people evaluang the decision are
dierent from the people who made the decision. 2 – set a public limit where the decision will be
abandoned. 3 – #nd a source of systemac and clear feedback. 4 – allow several people in the
evaluaon.
Creavity: development of original ideas that make a socially recognized contribuon. Creavity is used
to assist all stages of team decision making.
The Creave Process
-Preparaon: invesgang the problem/opportunity. Developing knowledge and skills of the
problem.
-Incubaon: period of re+ecve thought. We put the problem aside, but our mind is sll thinking
about it in the background. Incubaon does not mean you forget about the problem, low-level
awareness. Incubaon assists Divergent Thinking – reframing a problem in a unique way and
generang dierent approaches to the issue (Velcro example). Contrasts to Convergent thinking
– calculang the convenonally accepted “right answer” to a logical problem. Convergent
thinking does not improve any part of the creave process.
-Illuminaon (insight): experience of suddenly becoming aware of a unique idea.
-Vericaon: beginning of a long process of creave decision making toward development on an
innovave product/service.
An execuve was trying to think of ways to increase sales of ballpoint pens among young people. While
walking down a street with lots of neon signs, the execuve got the idea that young people would want
to buy pens with ink in bright neon colours and with pen containers that glow in the dark. This situaon
is an example of: DIVERGENT THINKING
A markeng specialist needed to #nd a new way of markeng the company's main product to clients.
While watching a movie one evening, the markeng specialist saw a scene that gave her inspiraon for a
new markeng plan. According to the creave process model, the stage in this creave process a8er
inspiraon is: vericaon
People who are creave thinkers:
a) are generally less creave than people with an analyc thinking style.
b) have a strong tendency to follow #xed pa9erns of behaviour.
c) → are persistent.
d) prefer spending their me improving exisng things rather than creang new things.
e) are all of the above.
