Ism is an action or practice (terrorism, favouritism) The passion for the real is also, by necessity, suspicion : image looks so real its unreal (spider on phone on table example) What do we look for to discern if an image is a photo or painting: context. Thomas demand: photographs a room, makes a paper diorama, photographs the diorama. Social realism: reality distinct from illusion the way things are. Willed tendency of art to approximate to reality : realism is a general, recurrent characteristic of nearly all art, attempts precise imitation of external and historical experience.
