Instead of paint being applied energetically, these works have fields of colour: calmer, mark rothko, barnett newman, hans hofmann, clifford still, ad reinhardt, helen frankenthaler. Important to this period because he was the guy who defined what art was: new york art critic, helped viewer understand what artist were doing, defined modern art through articles and reviews. Modernism used art to call attention to art : the flat surface of the canvas, the shape of the support, the purity of the medium, artificiality of painting, modern art should be abstract, not figurative.
