Sound was initially recorded on an optical track right on the film stock. Magentic stock (1/4 tape or a strip right on the film stock itself) gave better sound and began to replace optical. 4 and 8 track sound could be recorded and played back in some theatres. This gave a much richer impression, moving towards surround sound.
