Politics of representation: sociological activation of ideas in society in north america and the west was performed through art making. Nan goldin, david at grove street,1972: the way we see her work now doesn"t represent what she was going for at the time. Issues with documentary: biased, at a point was presented as neutral or aimed at drawing attention to an issue through the gaze of the photographer, it wasn"t neutral, but the photographer was. Nan goldin, cookie and sharon dancing in the back room, 1976: thought of herself as part of the community, reinterpretation of the concept of documentary. It gives a sense of power/identity to people who weren"t represented at the time. James luna, the artifact piece, 1897: taking back the camera, controlling it, used the camera because work commented on indigenous representation, laid mostly naked in a sand box surrounding artifacts and explaining his scars.
