Documentary has come under fire lately, because of the possibility of the manipulation of documentary. Documentary as a form has to perpetually change, to reinvent itself. It can happen at the level of the aesthetic, perspective, and mode of communication and distribution. The ruling strata are using lies more openly than before, and the lies are bigger. Bertolt brecht, the popular and the realistic (1938) Brecht was writing during a time of visual explosion. Margaret bourke-white, life magazine issue 1, fort peck dam, montana. Was acutely aware of the distinction between documentary and documentary-style; bringing about the idea that documentary could be a style. Took documentary out of the realm of photojournalism and print magazines.
