Document Summary

Studied at the julliard school of music (nyc) 1964-1966, paris: scholarship to study w/ famous composition instructor, nadia boulanger. Emphasis on compositional styles of classical composers (beethoven & mozart) Trained classically and then rebelled against classical composition = postmodernism. Glass met shankar in 1964 when asked to write score for film, chappaqua. Shankar was a famous east indian sitar player. Required to write score using east indian music, mentored by shankar. Instructed glass to remove the bar lines when composing. Creates a cycle that can be repeated over and over. Glass applied this to his western training - used this style w/ western instruments. Minimalism is a cross between eastern & western styles. Eastern - sitar, no time signature, sounds like sitar is singing a raag, meditative, hypnotic, Glass was doing lots of concert music - music in fifths is one of his famous ones.
