Cavalli brought to france in the 1660s to produce operas at court on the occasion of louis xiv"s marriage. Italian opera not really popular with the people. France had a powerful tradition in its classical plays. Pierre corneille (1606 84), jean racine (1639 99)/ In the mid-17th century there were some experiments in french opera. 1673 cadmus et hermione by jean baptiste lully (1632-87) Called tragedie en musique; later in the 18th century it was called tragedie lyrique. Tragedie en musique is a blend of ballet and drama. It combined serious (or at least not intentionally comic) plots of mythological themes. There are frequent long interludes of dancing and choral singing. Presented adulation of the king louis xiv, glorified the french nation, long discussions of l"amour, episodes of romantic and marvelous adventure.
