The marketplace for popular music continued to metastasize into hundreds of named genres, each correlated with a particular segment of the audience . Ground up impetus (localized, community based, etc), albeit readily incorporated into an increasingly nimble entertainment industry (e. g. , alternative became a marketing category and subset of most genres) So what does/can alternative mean: a) non mainstream music (e. g. , anticommercial, local, imbued with authenticity, putatively controlled by independent labels, etc, b) marketing label associated with pseudo product version proffered by major labels. Emerges in 80s and rooted in the 70s. Enduring and broadly shared theme of attitude of anticommercialism (variously expressed as underground and independent) Nb: this value system does not preclude the genres commercialization much less the commercial success of a good many of its practitioners.
