Haight-ashbury: by 1967, 50,000 hippies living in the haight-ashbury district of san francisco, most middle-class, had attended college, now lived as voluntarily poor. Living in communes; large collections of people together in one space, each contributing to the good of the group. Style of hippies: long hair, colourful/tie-dyed clothes, barefoot, bell-bottom jeans: politically active; usually left-wing; proponents of civil rights and protesting vietnam war, daisy was a symbol of peaceful resistance.
