NSE 112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Assertiveness
Document Summary
Describe the concepts of violence in the context of nursing oppressed group behaviours. Lateral violence is nurses covertly or overly directing their dissatisfaction inward toward each other, toward themselves, and toward those less powerful than themselves. Nurses are often silent about their own contributions to patient care, and therefore diminish their own sense of value, as well as their ability to deliver good care. The first step in altering the silence is to understand the cycle that has helped continue it, and this awareness alone is often liberating. They call for a greater understanding of the history of nursing to challenge the myths that underlie these beliefs. Horizontal violence, inter-group rivalry, lack of unity and pride, and aggression turned inward are aspects of the oppressed group model that have also been described in the nursing workplace and academia. Nurses covertly or overly directing their dissatisfaction inward toward each other, toward themselves, and toward those less powerful than themselves.
