100 views3 pages

Document Summary

Two primary empowerment structures in organizations: structure of opportunities. Access to empowerment structures is facilitated through formal and informal power systems: formal power - derived from job activities that allow flexibility and discretion in decision making. Informal power - derived from alliances or relationships with people at different levels in the organization. When employees do not have access to resources, information, support and opportunity, they experience powerlessness and feel frustrated and hopelessness and disengage from organizational life. Psychological empowerment: response to working in structurally empowering work environments and consists of four components: autonomy, self-efficacy, a sense of job meaningfulness and ability to make an impact in the organization. Nurses who feel empowered are: more satisfied with their jobs, feel more effective in accomplishing their work and report higher levels of patient care quality on their units, also reported with greater feelings of respect and higher trust.
