Purpose: determine patient"s prognosis and best treatment. Performed according to tumour-node-metastasis (tnm) staging system. Tumour-node-metastasis (tnm) staging system: system used to classify extent of spread of cancer. 3 assessment criteria: t: denotes tumour size, location, and degree of invasion, n: indicates regional lymph node involvement, m: represents presence or absence of distant metastases. Not useful bc metastasis usually occurs by time of diagnosis. Limited: confined to one hemothorax and to regional lymph nodes. Surgical resection: removal of a part of an organ or part of an organ (i. e lobectomy removal of lobe of lung, pneumonectomy removal of entire lung) Used to treat nsclc stages i and ii. Used in conjunction with radiation therapy and/or chemotherapy to treat other nsclc stages and limited-stage sclc. Individuals with resectable tumour but are not candidates for surgery. Palliative purposes bc reduces distressing symptoms (i. e cough, hemoptysis, bronchial obstruction, superior vena cava syndrome) Treat pain caused by metastatic bone lesions or cerebral metastasis.
