Document Summary

Selection of population to participate in a study. It is a sample because its too expensive and time consuming to study everyone. Quantitative research sampling= select sample in which they could generalize findings to a larger group. Qualitative research sampling= select participants who provide in-depth understanding of the phenomenon of interest. Generalizability of findings is not a guiding principle. Population: a population is the entire aggregation of cases that meet specified criteria. The population may sometimes be described as the terms one must not possess (exclusion criteria) Researchers specify the characteristics that delimit the study population through the eligibility criteria and state that a population should possess certain criteria (inclusion criteria) Target: an entire population in which a researcher is interested in. Accessible: comprises cases that are accessible to the researcher as a pool of subjects. Sample: sampling is the process of selecting a portion of the population to represent the entire population.
