Seeks to examine what causes what or establish cause and effect. Conditions of the study are controlled to minimize bias. All steps are planned before the study begins. Tentative prediction about the relationship between two or more variables in a population under study based on literature and/or clinical experience: e. g. , children who eat breakfast will obtain higher grades in mathematics than those who do not. Simple: predicts relationship between one independent variable and one dependent variable. E. g. , teens that use facebook have a higher peer envy score than those who do not. 2: predicts relationship between two or more independent and/or two or more dependent variables. E. g. , teens that use facebook have a higher peer envy score and lower self-esteem that those who do not. Specifies expected direction of relationship between variables: e. g. , the incidence and degree of severity of subject discomfort will be less after a 30 second injection of heparin compared to a 15 second injection.
