Document Summary

Atherosclerosis: build up of fatty deposits including cholesterol in walls of arteries. Cholesterol is required for healthy functioning but too much is harmful. There are different types of cholesterol (ldl and hdl) Hdl-c ghts against harmful effects of ldl-c. Tunica intima: smooth layer that helps blood ow. Tunica media: muscular layer that helps pulse circulate. Tunica adventitia: outer layer that protects artery. Exact cause of atherosclerosis is not known. Factors that damage smooth layer of arteries are: Once smooth layer is damaged, ldl-c can get into artery wall. Body tries to defect invasion by activating macrophages to consume ldl-c, they get taken up by foam cells that are embedded in vessel walls. Accumulation of foam cells results in fatty streaked in vessel wall. As fatty streaks grow, body tries to protect artery by surrounding fatty streaks in capsule creating a plaque. Eventually plaque grows until elastic artery cannot expand anymore, this reduces ability of blood to pass through artery.
