OHS 421 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Potassium Chloride, Dehydration, Fluid Balance
Document Summary
Iv insertion site for s/s of infiltration or phlebitis: redness, pallor, swelling, tenderness. Iv bolus push - inserting concentrated dose directly into systemic circulation advantage when amt of fluid pt can take is restricted. *most dangerous, med acts immediately & can irritate lining of blood vessels. *before administering med, confirm placement of iv line by obtaining blood return if no blood, it is in pt"s tissues/against wall of vein. 3 rights: right dilution/flush less concentrated when possible 1ml med diluted in 5- 10ml ns or sterile h20 right speed iv over ___minutes , if pt c/o burning, slow rate of administration right monitoring remember to flush after infusion. Iv fluid containers safest & easiest, only risk is with continuous infusion: if infused too fast, circulatory fluid overload may occur. Mostly used for vitamins & potassium chloride avoid adding drug to running bag, drug will concentrate at bottom not disperse. Assess fluid balance: skin turgor, body weight, pulse, bp, lung sounds.
