PAT 20A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Weight Loss, Furosemide, Myalgia
Document Summary
The liver, the pancreas, and the biliary tract are critical organs that are responsible for many functions vital to life. In addition to playing a central role of metabolizing carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins, the liver produces bile and detoxifies endogenous and exogenous substances such as hormones and drugs. Bile is essential for digestion of dietary fats and absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins from the digestive tract. (lewis 1217) Identify and discuss diagnostic and laboratory tests used to identify liver dysfunction. Definition: (cid:862)acute or chronic liver inflammation and cellular injury(cid:863) Infections (usually viral) or toxins: autoimmune, genetic. Pathophysiology of viral hepatitis: history of viral or toxic exposure, presence of antigens + antibodies, hepatitis involves widespread inflammation of liver tissue. Inflammation of peri portal areas may cause cholestasis impaired flow of bile. Liver cells can regenerate and resume normal appearance and function, if no complication occurs.
