Philosophy of Love & Sex Notes January 24, 2014 Love inspires in us an ascent up the ladder of love, from more distorted to more true realizations of  love (& beauty) • Diotima’s Speech: o First step of the ladder is to be drawn towards/attracted by a beautiful body  Teen lust, crushes o Second step = not to love just one beautiful body, but beautiful bodies  Can have sex with all of the beautiful bodies, but what’s missing   emotional connection, want to see other enjoy your presence, desire  the other to desire you and your desiring of him or her o Third:  what you want is a beautiful soul not a beautiful body  You want them to desire you for who you are  You want them to be a noble person  beautiful = noble   Oriented towards the god/good things   virtuous character   [side note]:   • virtuous/good character vs. some good acts o do the brave thing b/c its good vs. do the  brave thing b/c its in our self­interest  o knows the right time & place to break rules  (attending to the present and asking what is  good for right here and right now   sometimes the rules are wrong for certain  situations vs. always just following the rules  even though the rules may be bad for that  situation
