Document Summary

In order to be brave, people ought not to fear death. Writings about the afterlife must be censored in order to make people brave. Mourning in poetry = lamenting, regret; shows a kind of weakness. We are mourning our loss, not their loss of life. Socrates doesn"t believe in an excess of laughter. People that are overcome with laughter should be cut out in plays/poetry. Citizens caught lying will be punished for doing something that can destroy the city. Not the same for the rulers however. Rulers may lie on account of enemies in order to benefit the state. Poetry must not depict the gods incorrectly. No storyteller must ever imitate those whom they are telling the story about. Any imitation is imperfection in the minds of those you"re trying to imitate. When someone is acting, they have to be good at doing it, thus diminishing their self-worth; self-deprecation.
