Document Summary

Art and drama as we know it today comes from the ancient greeks. Originally derived from the celebration of dionysus. Cult of dionysus/mystery cult - the participants are not characterized by a certain kind of lifestyle. People had to go through a series of tests to enter the cult. They would transcend into a state of inebriation. Dithyramb - type of chorus done as part of the cult; wanted to get people out of their comfort zone to get them to be part of the play. Greek drama came about outside of the cult; people started performing the dithyramb on stage. Thespis - first actor in drama; stepped away from the chorus. Chorus becomes an ideal audience ; led to a type of commentary in the theatre. Aeschylus - wrote the first drama, called the persians . Wrote about the war from the point of view of the persians, not about the greeks winning the war.
