Gothic cathedral architectural features included pointed arches, rib vaults, ying buttresses, it create a visual rhythm & has importance of height/light 4. Christian basilicas function as a church, the idea of the basil- ica functioning as a church derives from the romans, as they wanted to a building with no linked meaning (since other eras had buildings that worshipped other gods). This design doesn"t have a narthex (front foyer). The byzantine era continued roman architectural forms/ design features, but was still physically distant from. Why were mosaics and telework an important medium for. Mosaics and telework were important to byzantine & islamic art because it had functional purpose (emphasizing the architecture), decorative purpose, and symbolic purpose. For byzantine, mosaics combine a lot of patterned aspects with symbols, coming from rome & introduction of christian symbols. This was an illiterate period so the art from the mosaics and telework would help tell religious stories.
