November 16th, 2015 Pornographic Art
Readings:
Kieran, Pornographic Art
Levinson, Erotic Art and Pornographic Pictures
Neill’s Solution to the Paradox of Fiction
Our pity for Ned Starck is based on a belief that he suffered
It is fictionally true (true in the story) that Ned suffered
A conflict?
o Pity for a fictional character in the work desire that work be different
o Aesthetic appreciation of work acceptance of the work as it is
Pornographic Art
Io and Jupiter (1531), Corregio
Turkish Bath (1862), Ingres
The Roaring Lion (1941), Y. Karsh
The Standard View: Pornography cannot be Art
“The difference between eroticism and pornography is one of art” – Andre Salvet
“The difference between pornography and erotica is lighting” – Gloria Leonard
Kieran’s View: Pornography can be Art
Though most of it isn’t
The Definitional Argument
o Erotic works are defined as works with the aim of sexual arousal
o Pornography is defined as works with the sole aim of sexual arousal
o So pornography cannot be art
A Revised Definitional Argument
o Erotic works are defined as works with the aim of sexual arousal
o Pornography is defined as works with the aim of sexual arousal through explicit
representation of sex
o So pornography cannot be art
o FAIL
The Purposiveness Argument
1. Pornography has the main aim of sexual arousal by explicit representation of sex
2. Producing sexual arousal in this way requires a focus on the mechanical details of
sexual situations
3. Thus pornography is formulaic
4. Hence, pornography will be artistically poor
