It is highly recommend that you print out the papers & bring copies w/ you to class to make notes during your reading & class discussion. Step 1: understanding the arguments: understand the positions or claims being made, when you read you should look for, the conclusion, premises, distinctions among concepts, definitions of terms. Step 1 part 1: identify the conclusions & premises. Identifying the conclusion & suspending our judgment of the conclusion: we never criticize the conclusion itself; we only ever show that the conclusion is supported by the premise, or that it is not supported by the premises. Step 1 part 3: identify what you don"t understand: things not understood may give clues to the problem in the argument.
