Appraising is a branch of empirical science, specifically directed toward the determining of value. Love is not reducible to individual or objective value. Love is a type of valuing called bestowal. Lovers create within themselves a remarkable capacity for affective response, an ability to use their emotions, their words, their deeds for bestowing as well as appraising value. Appraisal is a way of knowing, an emotions may always interfere with its proper employment. But love is an imaginative means of bestowing value that would not exist otherwise.
