The cave (Socrates) – image, there are prisoners sitting in the cave, they are chained up, only
look one way. On the wall of the cave they see shadows, then they go see outside through
education which is what true philosophers do. The people claim to predict what happens next
and pride themselves on knowing what they represent. But they have never looked behind them
or out of the cave, and didn’t know what exists outside of it.
- Most of us are prisoners in a cave
- Mass hypnosis
- The reality is that it was all a reflection of the sun making shadows of other people, and
creating images on the caves
- Image of reality is a trace of reality, trace of fundamental truth
- Someone has to drag you out of cave and show you
- It’s painful to learn new things, (the fire is bright & blinds them when they turn around)
- Education is challenging basic assumptions
- To call them trace of reality there is something right there, you are in touch with reality /
truth  but there is also a distortion / misleading / wrong
- Education is a clarification of what you already know (Socrates  calls it a recollection)
- Task of education is to help you recollect
What is the relationship of shadows on the wall?
Pg 214, Socrates says, education is not thing professors claim it is, they put sight into blind
eyes, this power is present in each soul, but the art is how to get someone who has the sight to
look the right way. Put someone on the right path
We need to turn it into a clear, systematic, coherent system, rationally defensible insight
When you are confused it feels like you are not learning, so you want to go back to the security
of what you once knew (in the cave)
