Through publishing was one of the first ways that he got his work out there. Magazines, contests, and publications will get your work seen by many more people than even a small exhibition. Writing grants and making submissions should represent one third of your practice. It is important to get the funding that you need to do your work and to get your work seen. Network, especially in the community you are in now. The world is incredibly small, and you don"t know if your classmate may be the key to your future at one point or another. Opening nights, talks, etc. , are a great way to network, meet new people who may give you an opportunity later on. Consider what, not only the form, but the materials used to exhibit your work, what things are made of, add to it.
