For the first decades of photography, there were very few family photographs, for a number of reasons. Hawarden was an exception; she photographed her children in beautifully posed, naturally lit, images, which she then placed them all in albums: lady clementina hawarden. In the first few decades of photography, formal portraiture was very popular, but it wasn"t until kodak"s camera came out that people could even consider photographing regular life. Kodak"s marketing began some of the conventions that are part of photography: the commemoration of important family events (first steps, wedding, etc, everyday, mundane scenes of everyday life. This kind of photography soon developed a set of conventions, which set it apart from art photography, at least until the late 20th century. Later, photography began to get interested in its own history, including snapshot conventions. Walker evans began to explore the cultural interests in america of photography and photographing.
