Document Summary

Astronomy class 3 january 28 th -29 th. Closed universe- gravity will pull it back eventually(5 or more protons per cubic meter would pull the universe back because of sufficient gravity) The sum of a patch of space and all the stars we can see in it (luminous matter)- is not enough matter to re-collapse the universe ( not a good experiment because of non- luminous matter) Non luminous matter- clouds of dark gas, some planets, dead stars, black holes, neutrinos and dark matter(vera rubin) The fate of the universe is still undetermined. Plotted star velocities vs their distance from the centre of the galaxy (a galaxy rotation curve) Found that star velocities measured at edge of galaxy violate newtons laws and that they were not slower but around the same speed. It exerts a gravitational influence on the stars causing them to deviate from newtons and keplers laws. Also affects members of a group of galaxies.
